System size first, then roof material and pitch, shading and orientation, the condition of your electrical panel, whether it is a roof or ground mount, and the panel and inverter you choose. Scope matters as much as equipment: whether permits, the micro-generation application and any electrical panel upgrade are included is often the real difference between two quotes that look far apart.
Floor area is a poor guide, which is why quotes based on it tend to be wrong. What sizes a system is your electricity consumption in kWh and your usable roof area, and two 2,000 sq ft homes can differ by a factor of two on both. For orientation rather than for planning: Green Building Canada models a typical Alberta household at 7,200 kWh a year and sizes that at about 6 kW, and published Alberta ranges for 6 kW to 10 kW systems run from roughly $15,000 to $31,000. The honest answer is that a year of your power bills tells us far more than your square footage does.
The system keeps producing. Panels do not stop at 25 years — that is simply the period most performance warranties cover, and they typically guarantee a stated percentage of original output at the end of it. After that the panels carry on at a gradually declining output with no warranty behind them. The component most likely to need attention first is the inverter, whose warranty is usually shorter than the panels', which is worth knowing when you compare quotes.
