Agricultural solar powers the loads that run on a farm year-round — well and irrigation pumps, shop and workshop circuits, ventilation, grain aeration and livestock buildings. On most Alberta operations a ground mount or a shop roof carries the array, because usable space is rarely the constraint it is on a house.
What agricultural solar can power on an Alberta operation
The useful question is not whether solar works on a farm. It is which of your loads run steadily enough to be worth offsetting — because agricultural solar power is only ever worth what it displaces, and on most operations that is settled long before anyone chooses a panel.

Why agricultural solar is sized differently from a house system
A residential system is limited by roof area. A farm rarely is — so the constraint moves to your consumption and to Alberta's micro-generation rules, which size a system to the power you actually use rather than to what you could physically fit.
That changes the design conversation. On a house we are working out how much of your bill we can reach. On a farm we are usually working out which meters and which loads to build around, and whether one larger array or two smaller ones fits the property better.
Seasonality matters too. An operation with heavy summer irrigation and a quiet winter has a very different profile from a livestock barn that runs ventilation and heat every month of the year. Both work. They just get designed differently — sizing agricultural solar power against a load that peaks for ten weeks is a different exercise from sizing it against one that never really stops.

Ground mounts, shop roofs and barn roofs
Ground mounts are usually the simplest answer on a farm. A corner of land that is awkward to work takes an array at the ideal angle and orientation, with no structural questions about an existing roof and no need to work around a roofing warranty.
Shop and machine-shed roofs are the next option, particularly on newer steel buildings with a clean south-facing slope. Older barn roofs need a structural look before anything goes on them — sometimes the answer is that the roof will not carry it, and it is better to hear that at the design stage than after a deposit. Either way, agricultural solar power ends up wherever the structure and the sun agree — which on a working farm is more often the ground than the roof.

No money down. The system is financed, and the repayment is structured against the power it displaces rather than added on top of your operating costs.

Equipment and warranty
If a manufacturer claim ever needs making, we file it — you should not be the one chasing a panel maker across a growing season.
On a farm the mounting hardware matters as much as the panels. Wind loading on an open ground mount is a different problem from a sheltered suburban roof, so the racking is specified accordingly and warranted for 20 years as a system, 25 on the feet.
Our installation work also carries liability coverage of up to $5,000,000, and we will produce the certificate on request — worth asking of anyone bringing equipment and machinery onto a working property.

What can agricultural solar power on my Alberta farm?

Do you install ground-mount solar for farms?
Yes, and on most operations a ground mount is the better answer. It puts the array at the ideal angle and orientation, avoids structural questions about an existing roof, and uses land that is often awkward to work anyway.
Can you put solar on a shop, barn or outbuilding roof?
Often, yes. Newer steel shops and machine sheds with a south-facing slope are good candidates. Older barn roofs need a structural assessment first, and sometimes the honest answer is that the roof will not carry an array — in which case a ground mount usually will.
Does agricultural solar produce through an Alberta winter?
Yes. Panels are more efficient in cold air, and the losses come from snow sitting on the glass rather than from temperature. Ground mounts are typically set at an angle that sheds snow, and for an operation with year-round ventilation or heating loads, winter production is doing useful work rather than being exported.
